Descent Legends of the Dark: The Betrayer’s War
110 hours 53 minutes and 32 seconds. That is how long my game group and I played Descent. In case my review for the base game didn’t sell you here’s one for the expansion. The Betrayer’s War was exhilarating to unbox. We knew there would be changes to the game but we were unsure exactly what they might be; but when all the new pieces, enemies, and artwork came out onto the table we were not disappointed. Fantasy Flight went hard in the paint to make this continuation of Descent feel fresh. Yes, many of the core aspects remained the same but there were such wonderful add-ons to the game mechanics you could see this game evolve before your eyes. On top of that, letting players keep all their skill progress and times from act one was a huge plus. The price point for this expansion can be intimidating if you’ve just picked up the first game or are just googling it to understand what I’m talking about but let me tell you every single second of this game has been worth it and we can’t wait for act 3.
Thunder Road Vendetta
Have you ever wanted Mad Max in a hilarious board game of total destruction? Well, now you can! Having spent a few hours with Thunder Road Vendetta learning the game and putting the pedal to the metal I can tell you I’ve never had a better time running my friends into a ditch. The gameplay isn’t too hard to understand which is nice for new players and it is unpredictable enough to keep veterans coming back. The only current downside to the game is that it is limited to 4 players. I know I’d like to see a chaotic highway or 8 people running to the end. In short, another great board game for the collection.
The Witcher Old World
The Witcher Old can be summarized much like the Witcher 3 game for first-time players. Extremely pretty to look at and enveloping in its story but a little complicated to start and figure out how to do everything. Old World really feels like a love letter to the Witcher series and once you get passed the complicated setup is very fun to play.
The Thing
A delightful social deception game that combines meaningful gameplay with a distrust of all your friends. The Thing strives to immerse you in its game by genuinely making players feel paranoid. I think it does an excellent job of simulating the feelings of the film’s characters stranded in that frozen wasteland. The Thing’s only drawback is that it can be difficult for players to understand at first.
Descent Legends of the Dark
It's an in-depth and exciting RPG with a castle full of detail. Descent was immediately my board game of the year, the RPG and story elements that made you care about the characters and the world far exceeded that of all board games I’ve played this year. Fantasy Flight upped their game from Journeys in Middle Earth. The gameplay mechanics are incredibly fun! They make you powerful yet vulnerable. Perfectly balanced as all board games should be. A true 10/10.
